K/A new-to-me maxi dress

I won this maxi dress recently, and am trying to decide whether to keep it as-is, or alter it (probably into a tube skirt, or maybe a maxi skirt?)

What do you think?

You could make it a tube skirt and tank -- and get the best of both worlds?

I really like it on you! You've already found some cute ways to style and I bet it's super comfy.

I vote for making it a skirt.

I am not sure. I think as a dress it might look better without a belt. I'm finding both belts too high contrast and confusing with the stripes:). Would you consider wearing it as is with a sleeveless longish gap draped vest (similar fabric too the dress? I thing that could look great:)

    Grr, just lost my post.
    I'll try again.
It would be nice to upcycle this dress as the stripe is great and the colour suits you.
As a maxi I have a couple of issues with it, the first being that it is too big for you across the shoulders. The other is that it needs some shaping through the torso so you can wear it without a belt. A belt spoils the look of the stripes, to my eye.
So, whether you keep it as a dress or convert it to tank/skirt you have quite a bit of work to do on it. I've just been through a similar exercise with an old tee that I wanted to turn into a skirt. In the end I decided it was more trouble than it was worth.
I guess the question is, how much do you love the fabric?

hmm. I'm one who loves that the belt distorts the striping.  I like it in the second colorway with the rich brown and the jacket.

I really like it as is, and I find a maxi dress to be so super easy for MOTG and still look really great.  I vote keep as is.

I really like it, even with the belt.  I think it needs a pop of color, the brown doesn't do much for it in my eye.  The white belt is nice, I like how it breaks up the stripe.  The shoe is a bit clunky for the dress thought (btw, I think I have those exact same shoes lol!) I much prefer a flat strapy sandal in a nude color or a ballet flat with this dress.  A colorful bangle will round out the seriousness of the dress color.

I like the white belt. Do you have a white topper? I tend to agree that a more refined shoe, with at least a bit of heel, would make a big difference. Even if you make it into a skirt the same would be true, I suspect.

It actually has an elasticized waist - I'll take another pic tomorrow without a belt.  Thanks for all your input!

I'm afraid I have a bit of a poison eye for maxi dresses but I think this would make a great skirt.

  • Jaime replied 10 years ago

I think a midi skirt - show us what you decide.

  • amiable replied 10 years ago

Yes, I think it's destined to become a midi tube skirt.  The weight it just about right for it.  I'm wondering if I can get a tank out of it too - probably with creative seaming... we'll see :)

You know I'll show you the final result - I show you all everything - the good, bad and the ugly.  I figure that's the way I'll learn the most :)

the tank might look nice with a hi-lo hem.

  • jennifer replied 10 years ago

Okay -my thoughts are 1.it looks wearable now as-is .though maybe a leetle loose in the top . 2.How long would it be in the refashion/fix-it pile if you decide a skirt would be better? (From personal experience -I have a big pile of "It'll be perfect-as soon as I fix____").3. Maybe a wider stretch elastic belt? ( I have 3 striped dresses that I wear wider belts & chain link style belts with)4.If you do decide to alter maybe consider adding a solid color border to the tank section 5-7inches of red or cobalt?
