K/R Goodwill guilt

I visited goodwill last night, intending to check out shoes, and came home without shoes but with some new clothes. They're returnable for 2 days - which should I keep, which return?

#1-3 Gray jeans - they're baggy and slouchy, and I like the way they feel, but the back view gives me pause...

#4-5 Orange jean jacket (the color in 5 is more true)

#6 a flowy white vest

#6-7-8 a black dress. I'm imagining it for winter, with booties and a bright jacket (like my houndstooth one here).

#9-10 white jeans, slouchy and baggy - better rolled or unrolled? (And are they too short? If so, does rolling "fix" them?) (also seen in #4)

I'm excited about these finds, but for some reason the guilt factor is also high. After all, I was shopping for shoes - I don't need clothes (though white jeans have been on my list for a while - I don't know how to keep them white) Those $1 each piece sales always get me...

Hi Amiable, you've said that white jeans were on your list so you should probably keep those. As for the other things, how much do you love them? Do they fill a need, or do you have similar pieces in your wardrobe already? Would you have bought them for $5, $10, $20?

  • Sara L. replied 11 years ago

Actually I like these pieces. The two pairs of jeans look good and I really like that bright jean jacket. It seems to fit you well. I'm not sure about the vest in #6, but I don't wear vests much so maybe someone else will have a different opinion. I'm also having a hard time seeing the details of the black dress to give an informed opinion (I find black hard to photograph too).

I think the pants might be too short (although I'm definitely not a pants expert).

I think I like the black dress, if you don't have anything similar :)

  • AJ replied 11 years ago

I'm terrible at judging the fit of pants, so I'll leave that to others.

Keep the dress. It looks great on you and it'll be versatile.

I think the white vest will be great in the summer over a tank and shorts.

Not sure if the orange jacket complements your skin tone. Is that a color you usually wear?

Great questions Molly - thank you.

I suppose part of my problem is not knowing what I want. :)

My list includes boyfriend jeans, which I think the gray ones qualify as, and white jeans. I'm also yearning for some statement pieces, which I think the white vest and orange jacket might be. And the black dress is the perfect backdrop for statement pieces - and a branch out for me since I wear almost entirely pants. (But does it fit too much like a sack?)

And yes, at other price points I would have bought them all - I may not have bothered to look at them or try them on, but if I'd gotten that far, they would have come home for the final photo/ylf review :)

Love the white jeans and orange jacket. I also don't know how slouchy and baggy are different? Or how much is Ok or too much??? Love some help with that question.Like the black dress.think it will be versatile for you.Glad someone else here also does the GW thing. Have fun in your new options.

I think they are all good, Amy. I think the rear view of the grey ones can be fixed by semi-tucking. I have the same back issue with mine at the waistband, and having just a bit of fabric draped over fixes it to my eye.

The orange jacket looks lovely! The white jeans look great for summer too.

Great finds! Why the guilt!? Wear and enjoy!

  • catgirl replied 11 years ago

I like it all - I do have a poison eye for knit dresses with a polo collar, if that's what that is, but it's hard to see in the picture. The white jeans are great! I had to pass up a pair of men's 501 white buttonfly jeans at the thrift store last weekend because they were a size too small - so you have to keep these for my sake!

  • Thistle replied 11 years ago

Not sure why the guilt, but fwiw, I think these are all fine.

I love both of the jeans and the colorful jacket. Those should stay for sure!!

The knit vest I am not sold on. I think it might look a bit dated.

Will you really wear the dress? I am just not sure this would see much use given what I have seen in your WiW posts.

White jeans & orange jacket - yay! And fun together.
I don't think the gray jeans look as good as the white, and I say "eh" on your black dress. Maybe it is too much volume? But that might just be me -

  • amiable replied 11 years ago

Wow - Thanks for all the replies everyone!

The guilt is mostly due to an overstuffed closet - I'm having a hard time purging winter items because I don't know what I'll like next winter, and I'm having a hard time purging summer items because I don't know yet what I like there either....

The black dress says it's a "weekender" brand. It's almost a polo type collar, but the front tab zips instead of buttons. It zips up to the top of the collar, making it a funnel neck if it's zipped.

As far as whether or not it's my style - I don't know either :) My style is changing pretty quickly these days. I do like wearing skirts and dresses particularly when it's hot (though this is a cold-weather dress) and to church on weekends.

So none of them are clearly "return"? I may just keep them and embark on a ruthless purge. If I don't like it NOW, it's not worth keeping on the off chance that I will next season, right? (right?)

Love the white jeans - in fact, I'd be thrilled if I could find a pair that fit like that. I also like the coral jacket - such a bright, cheery colour for spring. I also like the grey jeans. I can see the black dress as being a useful piece for you.

Strangely, it's the white vest I'm having trouble with. Somehow it doesn't translate to your style, but then as you've mentioned, that seems to be changing so take my comment FWIW.

  • amiable replied 11 years ago

Hmm... good point about the white vest Thistle, Shannon and Sara - I DID just purge most of my vests, considering that I never wear them. I picked it up because I was hoping for more white in my wardrobe, but I wonder if I'd wear it.... I'd probably like something edgier instead.

  • jennifer replied 11 years ago

I'd say to keep them all and lose the guilt ! As long as you are happy with the way things fit (slouchy) -I think that they all look cute. The vest would look amazing with a pair of cargo shorts and either a tank or a peasant tee/blouse ink blue or navy and olive colours? With chunkier sandals(could sub in hiking boots) and a belt and a pendant on a leather cord necklace.

  • rachylou replied 11 years ago

    White jeans, black dress!

The sweater vest is sooo close, but not quite right IMO. PPP!

  • MNsara replied 11 years ago

I saw this at work (where I NEVER log in) and just popping in now to say they all look like keepers and worthy of sticking around to see how they fit in!

If they don't play nicely in your closet, you can redonate them without any guilt :-)

I really like the two pair of jeans and the bright jacket, plus that dress looks like it has wonderful potential.

    Well done!

  • TraceyLiz65 replied 11 years ago

I totally understand the GW guilt of do I really need to add this to my closet? I love the white jeans and the orange jacket! Things like this that on on your wish list are an easy, yes... Not so fond of the vest... Think the grey jeans are a great addition if you don't have any currently... The black dress is extremely versatile, so a keeper for sure...

Then again I have never used the return policy... but edit at the store pretending the costs was retail to keep my honest...

  • Jaime replied 11 years ago

Honestly I like them all! Most of all the white jeans - I would love to find something similar. The other jeans look good too. The white vest looks nice but you should think whether you would wear it or with what. Hard to say on the dress because I can't see the details but it looks like a good length and I like it with the flats. The orange jacket looks like a good fit on you and, again, I guess it is mostly a question of if you would wear it, but if yes, keep!

  • amiable replied 11 years ago

Thanks all - I had mostly decided to return the white vest, but then realized that for the $1 I'd get back, it didn't cover the cost of actually going over to the store. So I'm keeping them all after all - and if they don't play well, they won't stay around.

    Thanks for the advice!

  • ironkurtin replied 11 years ago

How can you feel guilty over a $1 purchase?

  • amiable replied 11 years ago

Just that there's no room for them in my closet.... Though I'm a guilt pro, and could easily feel guilty about the dollar too :)
