K/R two sweaters from Gap

Two sweaters arrived today, and I need an opinion on them.
The first is a light blue - a color I've been trying to find for more than a year.
The second, I bought thinking that it might be a good 'statement' sweater.

Both are quite a big larger than I was expecting (I think my idea of sizing is still stuck on last year's size, not this year's roominess, so I tend to size up, when I shouldn't)

My question is: Are they nicely oversized, or swamping me?  A size down isn't available in the light blue, but is in the colorblock (which is the bigger of the two - and the light pink colorway in that one is interesting me too..)

I'm showing them about how I'll wear them (except, I hope, for the wrinkles from packing).  Do the proportions work at all?  Is it worth trying a size down in the colorblock, or should I go for something entirely different?

Another note - they'll probably shrink a big in the wash, right?

First off: that light blue is a great colour for you!  And no, I don't think they are too big- either of them.  I've been doing the same thing with ordering or choosing a bigger size to get more fluidity , and finding it unnecessary half the time.  I think these are both just fine as is.

  • Laura (rhubarbgirl) replied 6 years ago

I disagree; I think they're a tad too big, because the shoulders don't seem to fit. They're not horrible or anything, but I would prefer a size down.

  • carter replied 6 years ago

I think the light blue one has a nice length and fluidity for pairing with slim pants. The other one looks a bit like you snagged it from hubby's closet. Maybe size down on that one.

  • ma replied 6 years ago

    I agree with Laura.

  • Susie replied 6 years ago

I agree with Carter. I would like to see the 2nd one a size down but I think the first is ok. That light blue is so pretty on you!

  • cheryle (Dianthus) replied 6 years ago

I am not sure.  My concern is that the light blue seems to be pooling in the front a bit rather than draping down.  It almost overwhelms you.  Having said that, I do love the color on you.

I also think the size down in the second one would be a better fit.  Compare the fit on you and the model.

Amiable, can I suggest you try this ON sweater?  It is still fluid but has the curved hem and a bit of shape.  I think it might work on you.

The blue is a beautiful color on you!
I think they both are too big, #2 more so. It does depend on if they are washable-shrinkable.
To me it depends somewhat on fabric thickness. In the thinner knits I need fluidity but don't really do super-sized. Then sizing is not the only thing--sometimes an item will be too big in one size and too small in the size down, hence is not cut right to fit me the right way. I have tried to focus on does something fit me the way I want it too, which is informed by the "fashion" photos, because it changes my "eye", but I still have an eye for what I actually want to look like in an item. So I would try both a size down if you still are interested in both. Then see if you actually like the fit, whether it is called fluid or what.

apparently I am having a problem for discerning fluid vs oversize too :)

  • Thistle replied 6 years ago

I think they are both too big. The first doesn't look like it fits in the shoulders or the sleeves. To me, it looks too big rather than fluid.

The more masculine Colorblock really has to be spot on for fit to make it look like it came from your closet instead of your husband's. It has a sporty luxe vibe to it, but that makes fit even more important to my eye.

  • Elly replied 6 years ago

I like the light blue-- I ordered the same sweater in my regular size and while it technically fits perfectly and oversized, it doesn't flow as well (but that could be because of proportions on long tall broad shouldered me).

  • Carole replied 6 years ago

I think sizing down in both is the best option but the Beautiful blue sweater looks good especially if you plan to layer under...the second definetly seems too large....I have found Gap sweaters to be extra large this year...the sample photo shows the sweater fairly fitted on the model.

Since returns and delivery are free, I'd try the size down for comparison. I love the light blue on you in particular. It is hard to tell whether what we're seeing is simply wrinkles from the box, or an oversize oversize, if you know what I mean.

  • Tania replied 6 years ago

I think the blue one looks a little big but overall fine.  I'd sized down on the second one.  I love that blue!

  • amiable replied 6 years ago

Thanks all - I'll take both in to the store tomorrow and see if by chance they have a smaller blue.  The colorblock, I'll try if they have it smaller, but will probably be returned regardless.  If there's no smaller blue, I may try my hand at shrinking it, because I really do love the color....

  • shevia replied 6 years ago

The blue is a great color but I do think it is too big here.

  • N-Marie replied 6 years ago

I have the same eversoft sweater (two of them actually) - I had to go down a size from my regular size and it is still a roomy fit.

Yes - I've looked again now, and there's other light blue offerings on the Gap website.  Both will go back, and I'm going to try the raglan boyfriend sweater in the light blue instead of colorblock.  Just need to add something to the order for free shipping... hmm...

  • Nebraskim replied 6 years ago

I think they are too big. FWIW, I have a pale blue V neck sweater in size M from Eddie Bauer in my thrift pile I would give to you....It has a gather at the bust. It's heavier and not as fluid as these. Msg me if interested.

  • Deborah replied 6 years ago

I see you have made your decision:)  I was going to suggest keeping the blue.  I love it.  Love the size and the colour and would be most fab with a skinny leg.  Nice and warm and snuggly too and you could layer a long sleeve tee underneath.

The colour block one is just not right.  I think it is too big and I have to admit I am not loving the colour block.  I am often attracted to colour block items but then never wear them.

  • amiable replied 6 years ago

Deborah - I just clicked "order" on a size down of the blue (that's actually a solid version of the colorblock one, since they're out of the same blue) - I think I'll have a long enough return window to compare both... :)

But I think I'll still check the local store for the first one.  I so wish I could wash it to see if it would shrink just enough....

  • chadya replied 6 years ago

The first one is a pretty color blue but a bit too big.  I would not keep something and plan to shrink it to fit--never works well.
There is a nice blue sweater from GAP

  • krishnidoux replied 6 years ago

I prefer the first one, not too crazy about the second. The first one is nicely oversized, with lots of outfit possibilities.

  • chadya replied 6 years ago

Eversoft material I believe is an acrylic blend which will not shrink
PS  Check the GAP website today looks at though all sweater are on sale

I'm glad you are looking for more in that beautiful light blue, which is gorgeous on you. I had mixed feelings about the fit of this one -- nice over skinnies and leggings but maybe limited in how to wear it given its size. It would have been worth trying a size down, I think. I do hope you find something in this color!!!

  • amiable replied 6 years ago

I noticed the sweater sale at midnight last night, and ordered a couple of sized-down options to try.  Thanks everyone!

  • texstyle replied 6 years ago

I'm glad you're trying the sized down versions - I felt these were both too big but agree that the blue in particular is a wonderful color on you.

Eddie Bauer has a great sale on sweaters right now too. I've been enjoying one of the sweatshirts I bought there and have worn it quite often.

  • shiny replied 6 years ago

I think this sort of volume can totally work -- provided the sleeves are tight fitting all the way down the arm. And I'm afraid these two sweaters don't work because the sleeves are too loose.

Try pinning the sleeves and take some more pictures to see what I mean.

  • Debbie replied 6 years ago

Can't wait to see the sized down options.
