Specs shopping

I'm shopping for new specs, though not sure that I'm really going to buy soon.  I need an update to my prescription, but it's not super urgent.  Still, I'm starting to look.

I went shopping a few days ago, and tried on a few.  It turned out that I was limited to men's specs, because my head and the bridge of my nose are quite large.  So all of these pictured are men's.

These are ones that I liked.  Are any of these terrific, or should I keep looking?

#1 Coach.  I like the shape, but the big logo on the arm kinda turns me off.  They're brown.
#2 Izod.  These were probably my favorite pair in the store upon first trying them on.  They're dark red.
#3 Carter.  I'm surprised by how well I like the tortoise shell in the picture, usually I prefer solids, but I like it here.
#4 Another Carter - these are brown.
#5 - #6 And a third Carter (I liked how this brand followed my eyebrows).  These look black in the picture, but I think they were actually a dark brown.  I don't think I want black specs, so they're probably out.

I like the shape of 5/6 the best on you, with 3 as a close second. Did you like the Izod ones for the color, or the shape? Since you’re not in a rush, I’d look at some more options- if only to convince yourself that you’ve explored the possibilities.

I like the shape of 5/6 on you also and it is really tough to tell about colour. What are your bridge and width measurements? Don't forget, if you know those, you could possibly order in other styles in the right size to try. Or try online. Don't settle if you are not in a rush!! Specs are super important. And great to see you again!

    I love 3/4.

     Prefer 3 and 4

Thank you Suz - I do know my measurements, but have a hard time judging the shapes of lenses online in comparison with my face (my eyebrows shape, for example).  I'll revisit this store and visit some others too.

And I wish I had more time for the forum and an easy way to post pictures.  I'd like to be more active here again - it's such a wonderful community.

I am bad at judging glasses in pictures, and these are all from different angles, but what the hay ( :) ) I like #4.

    I like 1, 3, 4...

Thanks for chiming in!  I too feel like judging glasses from pictures is really difficult. I appreciate the help! :)

I like the tortoise shell for you but any of those shapes. Not bad, just not fabulous, but I'm not a good judge. Isn't specs shopping the worst?

I think shopping for specs is hard to do alone. Great idea to share pics here. I like 4 and 5 on you. Do you want a color that matches your hair? I am curious about how navy or a dark green would look on you.

Without even enlarging the pictures, I immediately liked you in 5-6.

Amy, great to see on the forum.

I vote keep looking. None of these style are smashing.

Have you tried Warby Parker? I think their frames will work.

  • amiable replied 6 years ago

Thank you Angie - I've looked at them several times, but never tried them.  I'll plan to do so.

And all of your kindness motivates me to see if I can take pictures of outfits again.  Or at least participate in a few small ways :)

    I vote #4.

It's hard to tell with the differing angles and distances in the pictures.  But I like 4 best as long as the bridge isn't too tight.

Hi Amy!  I like the idea of tortoise with your hair color but not sure if #3 is perfect.

I just bought a pair of Coach frames for my computer prescription. I hated the big coach logo and the optician said they were frequently removable, because some people like logos, some don't.

She took it off and I have a small hole there, but it looks fine to me. I probably could have put the little screw back in and it would look even more intentional. So if you find a pair with an annoying logo, ask the shop if they can take it off.

I quite like the tortoise color on you.

Of these, I like 4 the best, but the bridge looks like it might be a little narrow. I agree with Angie. It's good that you aren't in a hurry; it can take time to find the right pair. I don't think you should be limited to "men's" frames (though so many styles are really not gender-specific). There is a wide range of sizes available, generally, and you should have a decent selection.

I really like the Coach glasses on you! The angles of the glasses add some of contrast to your face without being too distracting (harsh lines etc). I also like the way they follow the arch of your eyebrows. I'd need to see them from further away to be able to really tell though, because from this selfie they look like they might be a hair too big for you?
