WIW: bootcut trousers and fluid knit

Today's orphan is a pair of bootcut trousers. They're taupe, I think - a mid-range grey-ish brown with just a tinge of pink in the color.  I tried to wear them a few weeks ago with burgundy, but there wasn't enough contrast in the colors to work, so I changed.  Today I'm trying them with a cream sweater and burgundy scarf and boots.  (And my cream/black/burgundy plaid belt barely showing in the pics).

The trousers fit well, but aren't really heavy enough for winter (I added silk long underwear today and am fine), and are a little too stiff for me to want to wear in warm weather. Plus I find the color hard to work with - I can see it with white or black - would it go with anything else?

Does it work? Should these trousers stay?  Suggestions for improvement?

I love the trousers on you!  I love the scarf bookending the booties.

Less certain about pairing this top with them. Perhaps a top with a bit more structure would balance out the bootcut?

I really like the pants on you!  You just rock trousers!

I like this a lot! That scarf ties everything together nicely and you look great in burgundy! I'm wondering what a semi-tuck would look like.

I really like whole outfit as is: the neutral palette, the bookending with burgundy, the silhouette (may I suggest the semi-tuck to showcase the fab belt?)
I agree with Thistle: you rock trousers :-)

    Thanks all!

I had semi-tucked the top - it must have slipped out for the pics.  I retucked afterwards, but didn't feel like having my son-retake them.  It is my intent to showcase the belt :)

I like the fit of the trousers a lot, and they look ultra fab with those boots. The sweater looks good, but how about a top and blazer? Perhaps something in ink blue?

The trousers look great - good fit, drape, etc. I also really like the color of the shoes and the scarf but I agree with Thistle on the top. What about a slightly fitted button down in a basic color that goes with the scarf?

Well I love this whole outfit and can't believe those trousers have been orphaned.  Is it the color that you're having trouble with?  The fit looks good to me.

    Thanks everyone!

Avia, yes, it's the color, and to some extent, the fabrication, that makes them weird for me.  They're both.... well, weird.  At least to me.

Like the trousers!  I think they would work better with a little more "structure" in the top (which is Thistle's point).  This is a fluid over fluid look --- which is very much on trend.

Love you burgundy accents -- to me, they make the outfit.

Love this outfit.  As an alternative, it might also look cute as a monochromatic statement without the burgundy accents and with taupe/neutral footwear.

You look fashionably slouchy and pull it off. Well done.

What a great outfit.  The scarf/boots bookending is great!

Nice! Of course I am a sucker for taupe. But I love the bookended booties and scarf, too.
