WIW: FFBO failures

Preface: This is long winded. Don't read if you don't want to :) I'm just asking for suggestions on why these don't work.

On to the long winded thought process:
I figure that I may as well share outfit failures in addition to success - perhaps you can help me understand what's not working about these.

Yesterday I slept in and was rushed getting ready, so I reached for a cozy sweater and jeans - a FFBO. I didn't feel like it was horrid (yes, it would be better without socks though), but I really wanted some color in my day. It felt dull and boring.

Today, I woke up with the thought that yellow goes with gray. I've been wearing my yellow jacket with blue only so far. So I thought I ought to try gray. So I put back on yesterday's outfit, but this time added the yellow jacket and new-to-me gray suede boots (like em?)

And it didn't feel right. After thinking about it, I thought perhaps I needed a horizontal line somewhere, so I switched to lighter jeans. (#3). The happiness factor went down immediately - it felt like too many trends (ombre+booties+faded jeans), and the bottoms of the jeans didn't play well with the tops of the boots. So I changed back to #2 and have been wearing it all day.

But I still don't feel like it worked really well. Some days are just misses, I guess.

What should I change? (I'm thinking that this yellow jacket and the gray sweater just don't go together - I just am not sure why).

What are your suggestions? Thanks for helping me learn!

PS: And I got a watch. I can't believe I lived 12 years without one - it's so nice to know what the time is! This I'm just sharing the joy of :) (#4)

I think the top would look awesome with white jeans/bottoms.

    LOVE your new watch!!

I don't much mind #1 but I think your jeans are too short and your shoes look like they need a good polish. I would like the boots from 2 with #1, I think.

to my eye the yellow jacket looks too summery to go with the ombre top, which looks wintery to me. Also I think I'd like the short-jacket-over-long-top better if the jacket had a defined waist. Plus the jacket looks a little rumpled. I think I'd like #3 just fine without the jacket.

And yes, that top would be awesome with white skinnies!

I also like yellow and gray, but I agree that the sweater and jacket don't quite look like they belong in the same season.
Have you tried that ombre sweater with your red skinnies and those gray boots(which I just love)?

I like you with a little color, and the jeans look a bit short in #1. l LOVE your new gray booties; the jeans look much better with them. I generally agree with MaryK about the yellow jacket, but maybe it looks less summery IRL? I like that it now gives you more color. And since the jacket looks summery, I like the lighter jeans in #3, or even the outfit w/o the jacket. The boots and lighter jeans nicely balance the sweater.

I thank MaryK nailed it (thank you!) The jacket and the sweater are seasonally opposite. Thank you for solving that one!

I need to taper the bottoms of the light jeans, then they'll play well with the booties and I'll try #2 again (without the jacket, of course).

Moira, I so very much need to try that combo - it would bring in the punch of color that I need, I think.

Donna, you're right, I almost always prefer a little color, which I think was my main problem with the outfit without the jacket.

And yes, the jeans do look short. I could've sworn they were longer. I guess they'll get demoted to "boots" pants :)

Thank you so much for your solutions.

Agree with everything Mary said! Tall boots would also work nicely with #1. FAB new watch!

What everyone has said, esp. with regard to the seasonal difference between jacket and sweater. I *do* like that particular yellow with grey and the boots help with the shorter jeans IMO.

Sounds like you have had good feedback. Another vote for white skinnies and #3 without the jacket! Enjoy the watch.

And your instincts are right --- yellow does go well with grey, like sunshine and clouds.
