WIW: ikat, linen, pattern mixing and leggy

#1 -  I decided after liking my linen shorts so well on my no-pics day earlier this week, to try them in a presentable outfit.  This was the result, and it was okay  nice and cool if not exactly stylish :)

#2-4 - Today my legs really need shaving, so for a day with lots of social activity, I opted for jeans.  I had forgotten how leggy they make me look.  Paired with my patterned top that now has normal-looking sleeves.  I'll probably alter them into diagonal sleeves, as has been suggested  but I felt like it worked okay even as-is.  What do you think?

#5 - When I picked up this skirt, my first thought was that it would go with this gingham top.  Imagine silver shoes rather than the black - I wasn't brave enough to wear it out...  I'm not sure I'll keep the skirt - it's a pretty big stretch for me.  Then again - I like to experiment.  What do you think?

I love all feedback - especially suggestions for improvement!

I like the skirt and I like the pattern mixing with the top.  Can you tie the top a little lower/looser?

  • DonnaF replied 10 years ago

Yes, the pattern mixing really works in #5, and I agree that silver footwear would make it sing.  You can tell from the thumbnail that the pattern mixing works since it's like scrunching your eyes.

I like #1 and #3 a lot. I think the darker colors and the bolder contemporary prints are so gorgeous on you, and those jeans do make your legs look a mile long. I haven't seen all of your previous posts, but these two outfits feel a little more... I dunno, chic? sophisticated? than some of the others. To be absolutely clear, I am not saying that with any intent to imply your previous outfits are bad. These two just look very polished, and to me seem almost closer to something you might wear for a nice lunch out. Like they're a level up the formal ladder? I hope that makes some kind of sense.

I feel like that skirt suffers from being in the same post with the other outfits. It's never going to get a fair trial from me next to those jeans that fit you like a glove! I seriously can't even give a useful critique on it, except to say, "it's not the jeans." Maybe someone else can get themselves together to say something helpful about #5. :P

Great comments all three of you - Thank you!

Thank Florence - I also feel that the darker colors are my better ones.  And the jeans outfit (even though the top is a bit too short, now I see in the pics) makes me miss wearing pants like I do the other three seasons.  Perhaps I need some summer pants.  Hmm...

I wear pants all summer, and I love my linen wide legs. Maybe something like this would work for you?

I like the shorts outfit! Looks nice and cool.

Hello legs! I think making the sleeves diagonal is good, the print and colour of that shirt look great on you.

I think this works! I like the skirt for you but I would like to see it with a cowl neck sleeveless or banded top.

  • amiable replied 10 years ago

Yeah Ceit - I totally agree about the sleeves.  Until now, it's been a call of whether I like the top enough to put that work into it (actually ripping the seam, not just cutting it).  I think I do, so it'll go on to the mending pile.

And Florence, I NEED those pants!  Thanks for the link - they look completely wonderful!

You look great in all these outfits! I love the pattern mixing, and agree it would look fantastic with silver shoes. Please wear it out of the house!

What about making the top in 2-4 sleeveless? Something like this.

You don't just look leggy. You are leggy, Amy! Lucky you!!

Some good suggestions for alterations. And we know you've had luck with it before.

    Hello!
You have such marvelous long, lean limbs!  #1 if cool and breezy, #2 is a great color palette for you, and the jeans are terrific --- I vote sleeveless for the top, but it works as is, too!

I'm not as convinced with the skirt -- the photo is inconclusive, but what's the fit like at the top?  I think the print would look lovely with a chambray shirt.

Ikat and linen on a hot day sounds like a good recipe and these neutrals look well on you.
I really like the navy and taupe combo and while I am usually anti cap sleeves I like them here.that's got something to do with their shortness being balanced by your legginess (envy).
I find the pattern mixing in #5 doesn't work for me. The skirt is playing second fiddle to the shirt colour and pattern, the one being soft and the other bold. I think the shirt needs a similar weight from its partner, for example the impact of white jeans. (aargh, you have 5 kids, forget that suggestion).
I'd love you to take that dear little skirt for a jaunt out of the house, maybe paired with a brown button down.
