WIWing in the fall

As I slowly get settled in the new house (it feels like a palace!), and work toward getting some semblance of a life back, I'm still getting dressed most days (unbelievable, I know).

And in my busy absence I missed signing up for the Secret Santa :(

I've mostly given myself permission to get dressed without much planning or forethought, but my wardrobe is in a happy place where most things that don't fit or flatter have been purged, and I have lots of clothes that I like.

Still, that doesn't make for great outfits every time or anything.

Nevertheless, here's a few that I've liked this fall.

#1 - caramel sweater, white jeans, cognac accents.  I love this sweater but have a hard time styling it.  I think this combo works okay, right?

#2 post-apocalyptic attempt.  I don't have many drapey black items, but I did manage to pair black skinnies with moto boots, a multimedia black tee and a drapey black sweater.  I was suprised how much I liked it.

I lightened the picture to show texture.

#3 A denim "dress" over leggins.  I think this is too short to be a dress on me, and am not sure the proportions worked even with the boots.  I did get compliments on it.

#4 My current favorite flares, with a sweater that I didn't straighten out before the picture.

#5 poncho with jeans.  I lightened the picture to show texture.

#6 a summer top brought in to fall with an undershirt and jeans.  It continues to be a workhorse for me.

#7 another poncho outfit - this time with moto skinnies rather than flares.

#8 Black, white and cognac (the jeans are black).  This was an ensemble a while back now, and I still love wearing it.

#9 Sub the jacket in #8 for a beige vest that I don't think it terribly unflattering on me.

#10 Cobalt and olive.  I had forgotten this combo until assembling pics tonight.  I need to repeat this outfit.

#11 Another one I need to repeat - flares with a gray/green sweatshirt.

#12 A different pair of flares - these ones dark with studs down the leg.  Paired with a blush and burgundy striped sweater that might be too big to be flattering?

#13 A way to wear a warm sweater when it's not really cold yet: with rolled boyfriend jeans and sandals.  It worked well with our current mild fall weather.

#14 An attempt at a new silhouette for chilly weather - a long drapey sweater over skinnies.  It's comfy, but I'm not convinced that it's at all flattering.  (I have this sweater in both cobalt and purple, and they are very warm and cozy, but I feel like they're a bit too big. I may pass them on).

I'm enjoying trying out a variety of silhouettes this fall, but feel like I'm mostly staying true to myself with how I dress too.  So that makes me happy :)

All comments, especially suggestions for improvement, are very welcome.

You are having a fabulous fall, style-wise, Amy. Looking great! My favorite is #3, the one in which you are unsure about the proportions. What a super look! I agree, the dress may not work as well as a dress, but it works really nicely with the leggings and boots. The scarf adds a lot, too, and echoes the color of the boots. 1, 5, 8, and 13 are also standouts to my mind. You wear flares so well (5 is such a fun boho-inspired outfit), and the caramel sweater looks terrific both ways you've shown it here.
I like the idea of 14--that silhouette works for you, to my eye, but I think you are right that the sweater is a bit too big. Maybe you can keep an eye out for a similar one with a little better fit. Or could you take in the side seams?

Wow, Amy!!! These are all hits and perfectly streamlined and cohesive with  your style!! I'm in awe of your fall looks, predict some  killer awards from others, too:-))

good to see you. looks like you are having a great fall! love the variety of silhouettes that you are wearing…i really like the 70s vibe of the poncho with the flares, but i equally like the way you've paired the poncho with the skinnies. but i have to say, my fav is #1, the white jeans with the caramel colored sweater, FAB

Looking great Amy. I'm glad to hear you're settling down in the new house!!!

I like ALL these outfits. None of them are frumpy....and these are a perfect example for gradations of casual wear. Some are slightly more polished though still cosy and comfy; others are downright casual and still pulled together. My favourites here are #1,3, 11 & 14. You look especially lovely in these!

Btw I absolutely love love love the pants in 12!!!! So fun! The look is very hip & casual; definitely not unflattering.

And oh yes----Pictures of the house with the furniture please!

After all that work, I'm glad you are enjoying your new house. Love your flares, and your variety of jeans. Great looks!

Nice to see you again!  I think these are all great outfits.  You've hit your stride, style-wise.  The flares look good in all the outfits.  I like tht ones with studs on the sides.  I love the texture of your camel sweater and it looks great with white and with the boyfriend jeans.  I agree that the denim dress in #3 is probably too short as a dress, but I really like it as a tunic.  Your poncho looks are all good with the poncho being a nice size that's not too overwhelming.

Hi, Amy, it's so nice to see you. You've got some great fall looks!

I didn't realize that you had moved but that certainly explains your absence. Good to hear that you are getting settled!

Keep staying true to your style because it's working well for you!

  • Jenn replied 8 years ago

Congrats on the new house! I love you in #14. I think your eye might just need to adjust to the new silhouette because, in my book, that's the best of a really good bunch!

  • Bonnie replied 8 years ago

I like all of your outfits but my favorites are #2, #3, and #11.

  • Beth Ann replied 8 years ago

You are doing brilliantly, Amy.  Lots of consistently flattering and fab outfits.

1,3,5,13 are my faves.  I love the neutral with white of #1.  In #3 the proportions are great, and the look suits your long, slender legs.  Your proportions with the poncho are very flattering -- you were made for flares!  In #13, I love you in the big cuff + classic loafers.

    Some thoughts:

I like your long vest, but I think I'd like this outfit better with a different sleeve length --- sleeveless, 3/4 or full.  Not because this is unflattering, but because I think it would seem more intentional.

I would love to see the big cuff / loafer combo on you often!

What about the black leather jacket with the olive pants?  I'm trying to mix my black with earthier tones.  I've just purchased a pair of Lee dark olive pants at Kohl's that I hope to mix with cobalt and black!

OK, I confess I'm not loving the Danskos.  I know they're insanely comfy.  I think the more deliberately and intentionally you style them (embrace the chunk) the better.  Your tall boots are beautiful!

    You look terrific!

  • amiable replied 8 years ago

Good point on the Danskos - when they show up in photos, it's mostly laziness.  I rarely wear them out of the house, but when I'm home, they're pretty much the only shoes I do wear (also birks in the summer).  The loafers are comfortable enough to wear at home for a partial day.

I'm really needing to get either some better looking Danskos or another pair of comfy every-day shoes.  I've tried on what seems like a dozen, but haven't found a pair that compares to the Danskos for comfort yet, so they get worn over and over.....

You have some lovely outfits here.  1. looks really polished, and your hair looks amazing.  The flares are wonderful on you for a different silhouette, but my absolute favourite has to be 3.  That is a really stylish look, and the colours are perfect for you.

  • Carole replied 8 years ago

You are looking great,Amy I love 1, 3 and 8! Your hair looks beautiful and you look so polished and put together! Well done!

  • Beth Ann replied 8 years ago

Comfy feet are not a luxury --- and truly comfortable shoes are hard to find!  There are a wide range of colors and styles to Dansko now, but I know that you keep your eyes on your pennies as much as your style!  I hear you there!   I think Una agrees with you on Dansko comfort -- and we know she has lots of style, too!

  • Nebraskim replied 8 years ago

My faves are 3, 5, 8 and 12. Three is just so current and fun. That dress works perfectly with leggings and boots. Super super casual chic. I also think the pants with the buttons on the side are cool. I've missed you and just yesterday wondered how you are doing. Not sure what size shoes you wear, but I put some size 10/41s Danskos and Jambus on consignment at the Fashion II at 33rd and Pioneers. Often that store and the OMT at 17th and Van Dorn have nice very gently worn and current shoes as does the Cause for Paws store on S. 48th Street. I'm not sure if those stores have ever been on your radar screen. Hope you're having a great fall.

  • amiable replied 8 years ago

I agree!  And I did buy a pair of better-looking shoes a couple of months ago.  My feet will let me wear them for a full day, but about half way through the second, they cramp up.  I'm totally planning to go for another pair of Danskos (a more stylish pair) before next Spring.

Now I need to peruse Una's footwear - she's a style icon for me :)

  • amiable replied 8 years ago

    Ooh - Thanks Nebraskim!

I've been to OMT, but not for a while now.  When I was last there they had about 10-15 pairs of shoes and boots, and all much smaller sizes than me.   I've been thinking though that I should go there again now that I understand my style more.

I've never been to Fashion II nor Cause for Paws but will plan to stop there when I'm in town on Friday (I'm about a 30-40 minutes away now).  My current Danskos are size 40, so a 41 is probably too big :(

  • Sal replied 8 years ago

You are looking terrific, and you look genuinely like you.  There are lots of looks here I really love

1,2.3.6.7.10 are my absolute favourites.  You wear jeans/pants very well but the tunic over leggings is perfect on you.  Great boots too!!  You look awesome in birkenstocks and I think these will continue to suit your style.

I agree 14 is a little shapeless on you - but probably fine for cosying up at home, doing chores, child time etc.  I have a big shapeless sweater that I love for these purposes.

While I think you wear flares well, I think 5 and 11 and 12 work better than 4.  Maybe it is the tuck, maybe you need different shoes.  4 to me does not really show your personality - it is not a bad look, but more bland than the rest, and that is only my opinion.

  • Ginkgo replied 8 years ago

You look fabulous in every single outfit. The colors are fab on you and the silhouettes are flattering and current. To me, your glasses and your hair really make your look, and going thru the images again I notice your hair has just enough assymetry to make it interesting and give it a sense of motion. Well done!

  • celia replied 8 years ago

So many fabulous outfits I cannot almost pick a favorite. You really found your groove when it comes to getting dressed.

  • Angie replied 8 years ago

Great to see you again, Amy. Glad you're settling in. You look fab and perfect for your lifestyle.

  • JAileen replied 8 years ago

You have a nice casual style. I especially liked #13. It really seems to suit you. Re Danskos, I love them and wear them, too. I think they look good with your poncho - kind of boho/hippie.

  • LaPed replied 8 years ago

I agree with JAileen -- something really nice about #13. Interesting how different the sweater acts vs in #1, which I also like, but somehow that sweater feels more "at home" in #13.

And that green floral sweatshirt is lovely -- I love an elegant sweatshirt!

  • Brooklyn replied 8 years ago

Fab outfits. No 1 is just gorgeous! And you wear flares and those green cargo pants really well.

  • Jenava replied 8 years ago

#11 is so awesome!  Flares with Birks!  Love!

on #12, the top I think needs to be paired with a different bottom - something slimmer?  It's voluminous, but I can't say it's too big till I see it from another angle and maybe styled differently.

  • rachylou replied 8 years ago

These are all really great. And so so different from your original look. I think you've abandoned hipster ag.... Like I left put a bird on it... Times they change ;)
