WIW: Orphan challenge day 3

Today's orphan is a gray-scale snake-print dress that's structured kinda like the magic dress of YLF fame.

Last year I felt like it didn't have enough color for me, so I wore it with a bright jacket once or twice.  This year, I'm unsure of the fit - I wish it were a bit longer (there's barely a half inch hem, so no real room to let it down).

Worn with my Spiegel lemming jacket (but I removed it inside, and outside after it got warm), sheer black hose and black shoes, and a watch.  I also wore a multicolored pendant in the triangle of my neck showing, but it got heavy and I removed it around noon, and forgot to put it back on for the pic.

What do you recommend for hosiery?  I'm ready to buy a pair of sheer black that won't snag on their first wearing....

What do you think?  Is this dress something worth wearing several more times, or has it passed it's prime?  Or should it go on style exchange for someone shorter?

Can you try it with leggings and your black boots?

I don't think it looks too short, but I prefer my dresses to be at the bottom of my knee, so I understand!

It is not bad and I like Ceits' idea of the leggings or tights with black boots or booties.

I see what you mean especially for a fall / winter dress in darker colours, one wants it to be a bit longer.
I would try it with the boots/booties and if that doesn't seem to work maybe it is time to pass it on.

Will do - next try with this dress will be with black tights or leggings and booties.  Thank you for the suggestions!  (I may even try that on tomorrow and post pics for your feedback on this thread.)

I really like the pattern of the dress and think with tights and boots this might be pretty cool. If not, I wonder if you can try the "make it into a skirt" trick?

I hear you on the length!  It's certainly appropriate, and, with your long shape, it's attractive, but we're all wanting a knee-cap or midi length and they are so elusive!  Love the idea of tights/boots!

  • Deborah replied 10 years ago

Amy, I like the length and have seen similar in some of our stores in past 12 months.  I love the length but understand for Fall you might need more warmth.  Leggings or opaque tights and boots could do the trick.  An alternative to a jacket could be a long draped cardigan 'type thing':)

  • amiable replied 10 years ago

Ooh - good idea for the draped cardigan Deborah - I have one that escaped the recent purge and might be perfect.  Thanks!

I'll make sure I try this dress at least once or twice more before I stick it on the "out" pile :)

I like the dress on you very much. It doesn't look too short with the dark stockings and would look good with boots. However, it's not as colorful as your usual outfits. If it doesn't pass the happiness test, maybe it should go or become a tunic over colored skinnies.

Darker hose (opaque) and/or boots would definitely offset the length issue.

I like the print, but I'm having issues with the neckline. To my eye, it visually pulls your shoulders in and in combination with the scrunching makes it look like you're uncomfortable.

As the other ladies have suggested, I would try this same dress with boots or booties plus slightly more opaque hosiery (tights or leggings). I have been able to "winterize" a couple of my own shorter dresses using this method.

I seem to think its a bit too loose?  I much prefer the dress with the jacket, as it adds some structure and shape.

  • Isis replied 10 years ago

I think the fit is off...is it shorter in the middle as if it is riding up? Also looks a little too big. I vote pass on.

  • KathyL replied 10 years ago

I also think its a bit loose. I like it with the jacket because it gives it more shape. The pattern and length looks great on you though.

  • Jules replied 10 years ago

If doing tights & boots I'd be curious to try it with textured coloured tights, maybe in burgundy. I think it would play off the pattern and add some amiable colour interest.

  • Angie replied 10 years ago

I really like Ceit's idea. I like the frock on you too, Amy.

  • Sona replied 10 years ago

agree- this would great with boots and leggings or black hose. It is definitely an orphan worth rescuing!

  • Deborah replied 10 years ago

Amy I just came across this outfit and thought it might serve as some styling inspiration.  The dress is similar to yours:)

  • amiable replied 10 years ago

Ooh - you're right! I love the warmth that the brown boots bring!
