WIW: plum for baking

Today I told my kids that they could each pick a type of cookie and we'd bake them after their naps.  I'm not sure what I'm in for, and I'm thinking I was more than a little rash in my offer.

I'm sporting my new haircut, which is looking and feeling better after a wash (but is still chilly, so I'm wearing a hat.  It's maroon, and doesn't match at all).  I'm also wearing a new-to-me plum sweater, and skinny jeans.  I decided to do the black-with-bold color thing in accessories.  Mostly because I didn't have any better ideas.

What do you think?

(I'm thinking that the haircut is just fine, by the way.  Look - with just a blow dry and no styling, it looks somewhat polished!  Too bad that the salon was such a tensing - rather than relaxing - experience.  I might be tempted to return).

This sweater is, I think, the last of my Goodwill purchases to show you.  Which means that I now have the pics to do a Fall/Winter purchase rundown and get honest with myself about what this habit is costing me.  Yikes.

Great hair! And that sweater is a lovely colour on you.

Five different batches of cookies? I'm gate crashing the party.

As I said in yesterdays post, I love the new do. I'm glad it's growing on you too. You look great. Happy baking. xo

May I put in an order for Snowball cookies?  I've been craving them lately.  My mom always makes them for Christmas and I'm getting ahead of myself by wanting them for Thanksgiving!
I think your hair is working out just fine.  In fact, with this cut, it should end up being easier to grow it out into a bob - because you've already got the shape of a bob - KYIM?
Also, the sweater is a great color for you - you have such a pretty complexion. And - what are the fabulous boots?  They are awesome and make your legs look sooooo long! (along with the skinnies)

Beautiful color sweater on you, great cookie-baking boots and amazing styling on your hair!

    Hey Amiable!

You are a most fashionable and fun Mom!  I love the color plum on you and think the boots are great!

  • Caro in Oz replied 10 years ago

Rash indeed :) Glad you are feeling better about your hair. You look great :)

  • biscuitsmom replied 10 years ago

I love it! YLF.... Happy T day!

  • Windchime replied 10 years ago

The sweater is a great color on you, and how fun are those boots?!!

I'm watching your haircut saga with interest. The new cut complements your face, and the back will grow quickly. I've had a few bad cuts myself; at least with hair nothing is permament! I think the salon should offer you a year of free services to make up for the bad cut.

    Happy cookie baking!

I love this sweater on you! Great outfit. Hope the cookie baking is going smoothly.

This cookie baking might not be an overcommitment afterall.  The eldest (11yo boy) didn't realize that I was intending this to be a TOGETHER thing.  He decided that he'd rather carve sticks out in the back yard than have to HELP make the ginger snaps he requested.  I told him that was fine, but I wasn't making his requested cookies without him.  The two girls don't get to start making cookies until their room is clean, boy #4 wanted strawberry pretzel "salad", so it's started, and boy #5 wanted "chocolate pretzel gingersnaps" (eww).  So I'm making my current craving, spicy chocolate cookies.  And they may be the only cookies we bake, haha!

  • amiable replied 10 years ago

Oh wait.  Never mind.  His fingers got cold, now he's ready to help bake :)

And Angie - it's six kinds of cookies - I'm making  a batch for ME too :)

  • Aubergine replied 10 years ago

You look great in plum! And spicy chocolate cookies sound delicious.

  • karymk replied 10 years ago

Amy you look so cute with the haircut! I think you should go back in and ask for a free cut next time for the trauma it caused you. It was all for nothing. you look FAB.

  • Angie replied 10 years ago

How dreadfully awful of me to leave you out. I'm glad you're starting with YOUR batch. Save me a biscuit.

  • Suz replied 10 years ago

I love the sounds of your cookie (yummy), I love the looks of your hair, and I think plum is a lovely colour on you!

    Enjoy!

  • Deborah replied 10 years ago

Amy, your hair looks absolutely fab.  It's amazing what a bit of self styling can achieve :)  You are putting my parenting to shame here:)

  • JillG replied 10 years ago

You sound like one cool mom!  I love the plum color on you!

  • Angie replied 10 years ago

I just made crab salad and spicy coconut sweet potato for tomorrow's Thanksgiving Day feast. (These dishes taste better when they're made in advance). I'll save you some if those dishes tickle your fancy, Amy. All that's left to do tomorrow is the haricot vert and bread pudding, along with orange and white chocolate scones for breakfast.

Okay. No more hijacking. I just love to cook.

  • amiable replied 10 years ago

Angie those sound amazing!  Can I have the recipe (or a link) to your spicy coconut sweet potato?  I really want to try it!  And your other items sound completely wonderful too - I've never had any of them.

I just have to make haricot vert tomorrow too (although a very American version), and bake bread.  I decided on a sour dough bread, so it's rising now.  The strawberry pretzel salad/dessert is almost done.  We still have two batches of cookies to bake (one we postponed to another day).  I'm feeling in pretty good shape for a relaxing day tomorrow :)

  • Angie replied 10 years ago

Sure, Amy. The recipe is in my head so I'll pop it onto the OT thread at some point soon. I don't measure anything - just throw it all in. Is that okay? Your strawberry pretzel dessert - like a bread pudding I bet - sounds divine. Would love to see a picture of it.  I'm stir frying French beans in garlic, salt and ginger. Nothing more than that. Nice and fresh with the rich sweet potato.

  • amiable replied 10 years ago

    Sounds wonderful - Thank you!
One of my sisters also stir fries her beans - I love them that way (I don't think she puts ginger in hers - I have to try that).  I'm doing green bean casserole (with the cream of mushroom soup), because it's a different sister's favorite, and she's going to be in town for the feast.

The strawberry pretzel salad didn't turn out as pretty as it should have, because I was slow in putting on the third layer.  But it's reasonable - I'll take a pic in the light tomorrow :)

Getting ready to clean up the kitchen.  That was a bit too much for me this evening - whew!

  • amiable replied 10 years ago

Oh and not measuring but just popping everything together is exactly the way my husband cooks (he's a much better cook than I am).  I'm growing toward being that way myself - though it's a slow process :)  But I love watching and learning from it!

  • Angie replied 10 years ago

Perfect and thanks, Amy. I bet your pretzel dessert tastes delish. You're sweet to make your sister's favourite for her tomorrow. I like that. My sweet potato dish has to be dairy-free because our host - Meredith - is dairy intolerant. That's why I bring this side instead of ordinary mash. And everyone at the dinner table likes a good kick in their food so it's all good. The kids normally bypass my sweet potato and load up on corn bread.

  • crazyone replied 10 years ago

Angie, the dishes you're making sound delicious! And I'm also a throw things together instead of measure things out type of cook, as well.  And Amiable, that's impressive of you to promise a batch of cookies for each one of your kids!  I love the plum sweater on you, it's a great color!

  • Jaime replied 10 years ago

Amy you are just too much! You have even already grown into your haircut! Happy eating!

  • replied 10 years ago

Oh yum! What was this thread about anyway? I forgot!

Ah, yes your gorgeous "blow out" and your pretty plum sweater. Your hair turned out fantastic! This could end up being a blessing in disguise for a busy mom. You look pretty in your sweater too and love the Docs!

I'm waiting with bated breath to see what your Goodwill purchasing analysis reveals. Happy Thanksgiving!

  • anne replied 10 years ago

I need to eat lunch now!!!

  • Alexandra replied 10 years ago

Amy, your haircut looks great! Too bad the salon experience wasn't ideal. Love the plum color!

  • Lantana replied 10 years ago

Amy I Adore your new hairstyle. Phew, it is a knockout.
And so are those lace up boots. You look fantastic.

  • Karie replied 10 years ago

Those recipes sound delish - I love to cook - I will pop over to the OT thread to get your recipe too, Angie! This is the first time in about a billion years that I am not hosting Thanksgiving (my sister-in-law is) because of Frankenboot. I am making Baked Pineapple - it's an always requested family favorite, and Saltine Toffee Candy (sounds weird, but it's sweet and salty and delish).

And Amy, you look wonderful in that plum color. I love those lace up boots!

  • amiable replied 10 years ago

Ooh Karie - saltine toffee!  One of our favorites here too, though usually it's reserved for Christmas.  I think I have the stuff to whip up a batch.  I might have to do so!

  • Transcona Shannon replied 10 years ago

I'm loving the hair more and more Amy - I'm glad you're growing to like it too. Fantastic sweater and I love the combo with the skinnies and boots.

I have extremely fond memories of cooking and baking with my Mom - just think of the wonderful memories you are building with your children.

And you and Angie have made me sooooooo hungry reading this thread :)

  • Neel replied 10 years ago

Oh shoot! You are setting very high standards for us mums :D. Can I send my kids over? :)

That sweater is gorgeous on you and nice choice of shoes. The hair looks great too :). And cute photo bomber :)
