WIW: Silhouette challenges

I'm still playing with silhouettes per Una's challenge, and enjoying it.  I've had a good number of fails, but it's helping me whittle down my closet.  And has helped me figure out my FFBO silhouettes too.

This is a bit of a post n run - I'm out for a date with DH once he gets back with the babysitter :)

#1 FFBO: bootcuts with a sweater.  This sweater it a bit short for me, and would be purged if it wasn't my warmest sweater...

#2 Success: sparkly tee under jacket with bootcuts.  This is daytime sparkle, and I felt good in it.  I don't think I would have tried this without the silhouette challenge and thinking that a jacket over a tee would be a new silhouette :)

#3 FAIL: cropped sweater with high-waisted weird pants.  I altered these pants last year to look/feel like track pants.  I never finished them, so finally did last week.  But when I wore them and saw the pic I had to change.  I don't think they're worth a second chance, ha.

#4 fail: Shirt under fest under cardi, with bootcuts.  I felt frumpy in this, and put the cardi in the donate pile.  But it doesn't look too bad in the pic.  I've taken to wearing hats to keep warm, so pardon the hat :)

#5 success: turtleneck sweater, scarf, bootcuts and plaid shoes.  I get a lot of wear out of these bootcuts, don't I?  I expect this will turn in to a FFBO.

#6 success: monochrome skinnies, sweater with a contrast scarf.  My favorite outfit in a while - I liked the colors, and felt very me.  This will also be an FFBO.

#7 neutral: tunic sweater over skinnies.  I was too chilly all day in this, and put the sweater in the purge pile.  But I may rescue it - I don't mind the way it looks - it's just not for winter.  Is it worth rescuing?

#8 fail: turtleneck with skinnies.  I was bored with this, and tried adding a vest (#9).  It still didn't work well - I think it's the color combo that's off?

#10 success: flared skirt with tights, fluid top and jacket.  Not super warm, but it was fun to wear, and I liked it.  I would have never tried this without this challenge - thanks Una!

#11 neutral: Drapey top over bootcuts - was too cold, so I added a circle cardigan in #12.  This silhouette is similar to my FFBO - drapey over skinnies - but I'm not sure it works quite as well - perhaps drapey over bootcuts is too much volume?
#13 neutral: drapey top over bootcuts again - same comments and question.

#14 FFBO success: statement top over boyfriends.  Maybe my favorite silhouette - it's so easy :)

I still haven't tried any wide-legged outfits, and I have two pair of them waiting to be worn.  So many silhouette possibilities!

All feedback, especially suggestions for improvement, are welcome.

All good but #10 is my favorite and I love the hat. I like #8, is it just too cold or is it the color. what about a bright necklace or a red hat?

I think too short tops are often the source of your perceived fails. My favorites are 5, 6, and 10. I think 13 works better than 11 and I quite like it.  If you had lower contrast footwear with 11 you might like it better (solid black shoes, perhaps with a slight heel?). You're looking good Amy!

I love all of your successes, especially the sparkly shirt/blazer one and the one with the green scarf. Also like #14 a lot and think it works better than #13 in terms of volume with bootcuts. Maybe because the single layer makes the volume look less overwhelming and the faux tuck at the waist makes for sleeker proportions? And I think the ombre sweater in #7 is really cute and worth salvaging.

You have an interesting group of silhouettes. I like 1, 2 and 14 best. I also like 13 and prefer it to 11. Have you tried a semi-tuck with 11? You might wear a longer ivory shirt under 1 to give it more length.

Thanks for the comments!  I think you're right Shevia, that I'm in general dissatisfied with shorter tops.  To have a sliver of tummy show when I raise my arms really annoys me and makes me cold.

Deb, I felt like the #8 suffered because of the color.  Something about mid-gray and dark blue makes me think "police officer", and while I like both colors, the combo feels weird to me, or really bland.  I do think a big necklace would help.

Aubergine, thanks - I just may pull that sweater out before they get donated in a couple of seeks.

and Joy - Thank you and yes, I have before tried a longer ivory shirt under #1 - I wonder if I still have one to try - I'll look :)  I also like the idea of semi-tucking #11, and will try that next time I wear it.

I really like you in a turtleneck sweater and straight or skinny jeans like in 1 & 8.

Well, I think you had far more successes than failures.  On the question of volume, it's only 11/12 that seems a bit overwhelming to my eye -- even a semi tuck would help here.  Also, I think it's the t-neck in 8/9 that's making you question this outfit.  It's not quite sleek and not quite drapey -- it's a bit in-between.  Believe me, I know all about this, since I'm having the same issues.  Flipping the neckline up and scrunching it -- along with the sleeves might help the structure of the piece.

I like the idea of #3 (great sweater).  I think the pants need to taper earlier -- too much volume in the thigh and knee area.

    I adore 1,2, 5, and 10 also (although I think I'd try a bootie or sleeker loafer).
I have a sleeveless cuddledud layer that I wear under my shorter sweaters.  It adds a bit of warmth, and keeps my belly under wraps!

BethAnn - you're right about the t-neck in 8-9 = it's neither here nor there.  Out it goes.  Thank you!

I like the sweater in #3 too, even though I have a hard time styling - it'll stay a while longer anyway.  I think I have enough bottoms silhouettes that I don't need the gray trousers anyway.

I was going to suggest something like Beth Ann for the shorter sweaters. I wear a cami or tank underneath and tuck into the jeans so no tummy gets exposed. In winter this is really helpful!

My favourites here are 5 and 14. 2 is also great and could be useful for a casual party?

You've got a lot of silhouettes going on. It's a great experiment, isn't it?
