WIW: Winter Gray

Day Vies posted a look with this skirt a few days ago, and I have one similar that I had no idea how to style.

So, even though she called it Hobo chic, I had to try to copy it. My white shirt ended up not working, so I used a gray sweater instead.

I've also been trying to understand more about proportion the past few days, so for this outfit, I stood in front of the mirror measuring. The top is 21", so I hiked up the skirt until it was 14" below the sweater, to make the ratio 3:5. (Or wait, is that considered 3:2?). I measured below the skirt too, but don't remember the measurements or if they were proportional. Does it work? If so, I'll shorten the skirt to this length and wear it more.

Sorry for my grimace in the photos - it was seriously cold and drizzly when my hubby took these.

You have great legs! To my eye, a shorter top would look better. I like my skirts to be a bit longer too, but I am far from a skirt expert! I do like these colours and the skirt pattern on you a lot!

Can we see the skirt's actual length? Like Ceit, I wonder if shortening the top or doing a semi tuck might be a better solution.

I like the brown and grey thing going on here and the proportions look right in both pictures to me.

I agree with the others, I want to see more of the skirt. I'm not sure about ratios, I never think about those, I just look at where the skirt hits my leg and where my tops end. There are some lengths for both that are always flattering, like knee length and just over or under the knee and cropped at my waist und slightly below.

    Thanks everyone!

I'll post a pic of the skirt full length as soon as I get a chance to take one. I think it's about six inches longer - it hits below my knee.

Funny how in the pic the skirt looks much shorter than it did in the mirror - I thought it was nearly touching the top of my knee.

That skirt would look great just grazing the tops of those boots, if that's how long it really is!

I like this combo. I suspect the proportions might work better with the longer skirt and a semi tuck of the sweater, but let's see!

vipbrj - I don't think it reaches the boots. But I'll give it a try and see. It might be a day or two, as I'm nursing a handful of sick kiddos right now :/

Proportions: because of the way the skirt flares, I think you want the skirt to be the 3/5 or 2/3 part. Can you approximate that by letting the skirt go full length and tucking and/or belting the top?

Thanks for explaining why to me L'abielle!
