WTS: Dress for summer wedding

I'm considering sewing a dress to wear to my cousins summer wedding in, ulp, a couple of weeks.  (In Los Angeles - any tips for road tripping for 22 hours with five kids?)

Here's two options that I'm considering.  I'd make it out of jersey knit (probably red or blue solid).  Do either of these look like they'd work on my body and for a casual wedding?

(If I did the twist dress, shown in purple here, I'd probably opt for sleeveless).

I have plenty of other dress patterns - I just haven't looked through them yet to see what they are, and what fabric I have that would work for them....  So if neither of these look right, I'll keep looking.

My first thought is do you have any similar dresses in your closet now that you love? If so, go with the one that most looks like those dresses.

I recall you having a pretty easy time finding fab jeans and a tougher time finding dresses, so I would be hesitant to make a dress in a silhoutte you don't already love.

Good point Thistle.  I do have a dress with a similar silhouette to #2, and I get compliments every time I wear it, but even so don't like it a whole lot (but I think it has more to do with the print than the shape).  It's here. Ignore the pants underneath....(Maybe I could just wear that exact dress to the wedding with a summery or bright jacket....?)

I like the style of the second (purple ) dress best.
You are brave to do a road trip with 5 children. Travel mostly at night, lots of healthy, non- sugary ( sugar highs are awful), non-salty (less thirst= fewer bathroom stops). Sing! Books on tape ( the library probably has them). We would watch to see who sees the next water tower, bird on the fence, cow, bridge, etc. and other games like starting a story for the next to continue, etc.

Ami:  I prefer the twist dress, and sleeveless would be great!

I second audio books for the trip!

I like the purple twist dress best. Wow, impressed you can sew and raise 5 kids! My hat is off to you....Lots of snacks, games, portable TV's with movies, anxiety medication!

I like the twist dress the best too.

Love the second dress, sleeveless, and that was like ticking off the first answer that came to mind on a test, so it came easy.

I don't have children, but aren't there also road games they can play, from books, like looking at signs or buildings and something visually stimulating. Have fun.

Ya, I think #1 is too casual. #2 is my preference, but not that purple.

Another vote for #2 and audiobooks.  I always check out multiple ones from the library because you can never tell if a CD has gone bad or if you hate the reader's voice.  Even though we had read them, on one long trip we listened to Harry Potter.  Mysteries are good because they almost make you want to get back in the car.

Love the shape of #2.  When you are done making yours, you can make one for each of us!

I went to a formal dance in high school in a twist dress like that.... I vote twist!

Any of these will do fab, Amy! But, does it worth your time and money(for the fabric) sewing it yourself(when having 5 kinds at home)????.
I used to sew myself, too-but jersey knitt can be tricky....Maybe you can find one similar dress easier to buy and still within your budget. Anyway, good luck!

The twist dress is lovely.  I am afraid the first thing I see when I look at the first dress is the ladies breasts..  the cut of the dress accentuates them in a way that I don't find all that attractive.. hope it's ok to say that:)

The first dress has a nice modern feel and I like how is skims the body.

Yes Deborah - the first dress has that problem in some - I don't think it would be a problem in me, but it definitely does emphasize!   I have sewn the second dress before though (as a top), and have the fabric for it on hand, so I think I'll give it a whirl if I get some "free" time.  (And if not, I'll just wear something I have on hand and deal with it ) :)

Thanks you all for your input!  The twist dress it is!  If/when I do it, I'll be sure to show you all.

I prefer the second dress also.  If you already have a top like that already then you at least have an idea how the top of the dress will fit.

We go on frequent road trips with our kids (12 hours to Mexico every summer) and a portable DVD player is the best invention ever for long car rides.  I don't normally let my kids watch lots of TV so they're always excited to watch movies in the car.  Books, snacks and drinks also keep them occupied.  If your kids like video games, those work too - we have a Nintendo DS that they like to play on.
