Black in Spring

I was inspired by this ensemble to try to style a black and white summer dress with black skinnies and a black leather jacket.  I also wore black shoes and carried a black bag with gold hardware.  I got compliments on how it turned out, and felt comfortable (and even warm enough) in it.

What do you think?  Is this an outfit worth repeating?

Well look at you Amy! I think that turned out really well. The white pattern in the dress lightens it up a bit and the skinnies and leather jacket were there for warmth. It would even work with a shorter dress too, because of the jeans. I was just noticing that if your shoes didn't have straps, they's look kind of like d'Orsay flats (something on my HEWI list). Good outfit, and worth repeating I'd say!

Thank you Claire - I actually wear this shoes because they remind me of d'Orsay flats.  But when I try to wear the straps under my foot, they don't stay on, so I don't think I can get away with removing them :)

I had originally intended to wear a strappy heel, but my feet wouldn't tolerate them.

    Gorgeous!  Definitely repeat.

    This works really well Amy.

    Love.  Perfect shoe choice.

Definitely an outfit Worth repeating! But if I were to be brutally honest, I admit I am not a fan of those shoes. Something with more structure would set off your outfit more! I love black, and I am wearing head to toe black right now! I get a little paranoid in summer that it looks too hot and too black, but I say, black is perfect for all seasons!

YLF. I'd like to see the dress a little shorter too.

There seem to be x2 Caro's now :)

Great jacket, great shoes! Looks good, except the dress is maybe a little too long to wear with flats. You could either hem it a tad, or wear the same outfit with a chunky heel.

  • amiable replied 10 years ago

Ha - you're right Caro!  And I agree about the length of the dress.  I think it'll be great with bare legs in summer though, so I'm unlikely to shorten it.

  • Deborah replied 10 years ago

Love this Amy!  I agree the dress could be shorter but understand if you are going to be wearing it for summer you wont shorten.  I don't think the length is a deal breaker for wearing like this.  You could add a bit of height with heeled black booties.

I like this! I like the sandals, but it might also be cute with boots.  Very creative!

  • Joy replied 10 years ago

Amy, this looks wonderful. One of your best. Of course you should repeat. The dress length doesn't bother me, but if you want to " shorten" it, you could try belting it.

Amy, I love this on you! It's quite a different look than I've seen on you. (Mind you, I've only been reading YLF since Sept. 2013.) Perhaps the dress length and shoe style could be tweaked a wee bit, but the colors and proportions of edge to softness really suit you. How did you feel in this? I'd like to see you try more outfits with a similar vibe.

Oh, this is just fantastic! Hehe... where you going all dressed up?

  • Aida replied 10 years ago

Definitely worth repeating, you look great!

  • Jaime replied 10 years ago

    Yes!

  • Suz replied 10 years ago

Wow, great experiment, Amy! Aren't Angie's ensembles the best? I find they really push me forward (when I try them out).

This works really well to my eye. I agree with the others about the dress length (for proportion) but Joy has a point that you could possibly belt the dress a bit and blouse it. Of course then it would be less tunic like. But it might be worth a shot.

Wow Amy, great edgy look on you! Love! :-) Go with some chuncky  moderate heels to this, so you wouldn't have to shorten your summer dress!

Came back to ask y'all what about proportions if having chunckier and somehow curvier to side thighs(me!)? I cannot sport leggings with tunics/dresses shorter than just above the knees for this one exact, speciffic and main reason, can somebody help?

I love the flats (the alike yet made of pony I've bought in Aldo just recently) and each item separately. Speaking of the outfit, I'd suggest to add some white, as it is black-and-white outfit, and the black prevails so far.

oh my goodness, i love this!

  • Aubergine replied 10 years ago

Kk - Yep - I'm trying to grow out the pixie into an inverted bob.  I think I'm only a couple of months away from having it :)
