WIW: Not orphans

On Saturday, I took Angie's advice, and purged many of my problem orphans.  In fact I went further.  On Friday I'd read the "Stylish minimalist wardrobe" series here, and decided I was inspired to try a slightly more minimal wardrobe.

So I purged my "probation" zone, and moved into probation everything that wasn't black, white, gray, red (any dark shade, and I kept a couple of orange items out) or blue (any shade, including teal and turquoise), and anything that was patterned with a pattern other than stripes or plaid.  We'll see how long it takes me to get tired of what's left!  (My guess is that this won't be a long experiment - but it does include all of my favorites, so we'll see).

So to church yesterday, I wore what proved to be a new favorite - black and white striped tube skirt (the camera angle makes it look longer than it was, or I hiked it up later - I'm not sure - but it hit at the widest point of my calves, to make them look a little curvier), and my burgundy cowl neck sweater.  Happiness factor was high in this, yay!

What do you think?  Is this combo a winner?  What should I do to improve it?

You look beautiful Amy! Definitely a winner in my book. Shades of red really flatter you, so I am glad that you are keeping them in your (experimental) pared down wardrobe. I will be interested to see how this new challenge works out for you. I have been considering a similar tactic with my current seasonal wardrobe.

Nice work! I've been doing experiments on a minimalist wardrobe too!

    You look lovely!

Great and inspirational post! I have way too much in my "probation" zone!
My take on graphic black and white prints is that you can pair them with anything. I love the stripe skirt with the soft sweater!

You look lovely! This shade of red looks fantastic on you and you wear a tube skirt well.

GREAT outfit! You look terrific. (Loving the color on your lips, too, did you ever find a lipstick/gloss/whatever you were happy with?)

love the tube skirt and sweater. Would like to see this with a plain pump ( no straps) as the current shoes keep drawing my eyes downward instead of focusing on your beautiful face. Something to think about.

Thanks everyone!  I too liked this outfit.  And Sona, I can wear the straps of these shoes beneath my feet too - I'll try that out.

I found two lipsticks Word Lily - one is very natural colored (barely different than my lip tone, just more even), and this one is darker.  I like this one better - though I usually don't wear it as thick as I did in this pic.  (The other one is on last Sunday's wiw, I think).

Neither last more than  a few hours though, so it doesn't take long to get back to my plain ol' natural lip, since it generally doesn't occur to me to reapply it.

Great outfit, especially with the jacket.  Love the color on you.  I'm unsure about the shoes, because of the contrast between the stripes and the x of the straps.

I feel lucky if my lipstick lasts an hour!  Maybe I should look for something new, but I prefer natural products.

Lovve the graphic print with the soft sweater. The tube skirt looks amazing on you!

Yeah, probabtion zones that get too big need to be purged  :)  It is just hard sometimes.

Totally awesome outfit!  Can't wait to see where this experiment takes you.  Two lipsticks?!?  I bet I have 40.  I love lipstick, but this didn't happen until I was mid to late 40s.  Now I just don't feel complete without it.

Glad you felt the freedom to say goodbye.  Clothes are not people, and we don't have to love them and care for them in their old age!

This look is fabulous and perfect for Sunday!  Your look looks a little like one of Goldenpig's!  I think it would look fabulous with booties, too, altough sometimes one goes for a little more "pretty" than "edgy" at church.

Hope you find your "right sized" wardrobe!

I love the shades of red in the shirt and lipstick! You look so glamorous and striking. :)

I did a couple of purges about two years ago, and after the second round I really loved my closet! I'm by no means minimal but it's nice knowing that everything meets my basic requirements for happiness while wearing.

You look good! Love the lipstick. I agree with Sona that a less strappy shoe might look better here.

Very nice! Great fuzzy sweater ^^ I like the idea of trying the straps underneath as well, it will clean up the lines a bit. That sweater would also look fab with some flared jeans/pants a la Angie's post today.

Huge winner! Deep red/burgundy is your color for sure.

Great outfit, perfect for church! Love the navy stripes with burgundy knitt, and leather jacket is more than fab over all these!

Love the color combo on you. I just purged most of my orphans too, so for the challenge I'm trying to mostly wear things in new combinations. Mourning has forced me into a sort of smaller wardrobe experiment.

You look gorgeous head to toe Amy. I love you in the red with neutrals and your lovely smile and bright lippy are the icing on the cake!

  • karymk replied 10 years ago

Hi the reds look so pretty on you.  Might I suggest a solid handbag and cleaner-lined shoe?

  • pil replied 10 years ago

Very nice, Amy! Look at you and your stripe on stripe with the bag.

  • Jaime replied 10 years ago

Big smile! Move on to the favorites!
