WIW: dressing like a crayon

For the last day of scarfs, I tried my red jeans with stripes. Alas, the top is too short and bugged me. (I segregated my woven tops based on length - I think it's time to do the same with my tees. Wonder if I'll have any that are long enough for my pants...)

So I changed into my paisley/jacket combo from earlier this week. It felt so happy with the red jeans! Then I took my kids to the children's museum, and was startled that in a venue filled with Moms on the go (well, and Grandmas on the go), there was exactly one other person there (a daycare worker) in skinny jeans. And no non-blue jeans in sight. I was the only adult there wearing bright colors! I felt a bit like a walking crayon.

But hey, I was comfortable, and easy for my kids to find. And I felt fine, if a little OTT. If anything, I wished I'd done my hair :/

Wasn't it just a couple of weeks ago that my dressing not like everyone else in Von Maur made me feel so awful? Today, it actually made me feel somehow more cool... (Not that I didn't have a few moments where I wished I looked like the other Moms - I almost wondered if I looked like a slave to fashion. Wouldn't that be weird?!)

#2 is super fab. Love the sweet accessory!

  • claracluck replied 11 years ago

you know what you look happy relaxed and stylish i love your whole outfit in both pics.and your lovely kiddie is doing a good job sweeping that floor!

  • Rosebuddy replied 11 years ago

You look marvelous and adorable in that second outfit. I love the paisley and jacket and boots with the pants. I guess you are the trend setter in your area...you go girl!!

  • replied 11 years ago

You look happy and lovely in the second!

  • Aida replied 11 years ago

#2 looks lovely! I think #1 would work perfectly well with the top fully tucked in (and you could even pop on that black blazer, too!), especially liking that chunky burgundy scarf with the outfit. Red pants certainly won't help you blend in with the crowd, but if they make you happy I say wear with confidence!

I like both looks and I bet those other moms wish they were wearing something as great as red skinnies!

  • moira replied 11 years ago

I can't tell you how much I love both of these. I am sorry the striped shirt wasn't comfy, because it looks terrific.
I bet you don't look like the other mommies anymore.

  • amiable replied 11 years ago

You know what Moira, the striped shirt was comfy, I just didn't think it looked right - too boxy and too short. I think that Aida's suggestion to full-tuck it and/or add a jacket might save it from the "out" bin.

Thanks you all! I love my red jeans (I know, it shows!). I'm pretty sure I have at least a dozen outfits I can make out of these. When I've tried all I can think of, I'll post a run-down.

    These both looks great IMO!

  • Suz replied 11 years ago

You look great!! Those red jeans are your very best buy yet. I actually like both outfits, though agree with Aida the top in #1 could be totally tucked and jacketed-over. Fab scarf, too.

  • Debora replied 11 years ago

You are a fashion forward MOTG and look gorgeous! I love both looks. Maybe you can find a longer tee to replace the one that is too short. Your little one is darling.

  • qfbrenda replied 11 years ago

I like both of those looks! Nicely done.

  • Susie replied 11 years ago

You look so great! You totally look like the mom who's got it all together. Those red jeans are such a good addition to your wardrobe. I bet all the other moms were wishing they were crayons too!

    PS your son is adorable!

  • Adelfa replied 11 years ago

I liked both looks too, but I agree the paisley with the red jeans is really special. Today, on casual Friday, I wore a skirt and pearls when I knew everyone else would wear jeans. I felt like it! It's a very tough gig, this being a slave to fashion, but someone's got to do it!

Fab looks. Even fabber is the change in how you feel - the power of the right clothes:)

  • catgirl replied 11 years ago

#2 is terrific and that shirt looks wonderful! You are on a roll, girl!

  • Kiwichik replied 11 years ago

#2 is terrific. What a shame the striped top didn't work out as stripes would be fab with those pants - did you try to half tuck the top & drop the scarf?

  • Beth Ann replied 11 years ago

Yeah! I agree that #1 would work better fully tucked, but #2 is sensational!

I know exactly what you mean about "blending" versus being distinctive in a crowd. No one in my set wears colored denim, either. But then I remember how wonderful it is to see women who look confident, put-together, but still so friendly and approachable and think, "I want to be like her!" These women don't dress to be seen, but to feel fab! Maybe you gave a little inspiration to someone else today.

I love this outfit on you (both in fact). Amiable, I secretly like that I don't dress like most people where I live:). Funny you comment about your hair because I was thinking how fab it looks, and you look gorgeous. Your style evolution is a joy to behold and you are just looking more and more lovely with each outfit you post.

  • Ingunn replied 11 years ago

*wawing at my red pants twin* You look great in both versions, Amiable! Colorful and confident is FAB:)

  • krishnidoux replied 11 years ago

I like both, pic one is more "expected", pic 2 is innovative and smart. I really love the colour combination of that outfit. I prefer the silhouette too. I think in order to succeed the stripes look, a longer, more form fitting boat neck would be great.

And look! You have an adorable helper cleaning the floor for you!

  • Jules replied 11 years ago

Those other moms are all out buying red skinnies today :)

  • amiable replied 11 years ago

You all really know how to make someone's day!

I have to admit - these jeans make fashion a lot more fun for me. I've always liked bright colors, and I'm starting to learn that they like me back!

  • Sara L. replied 11 years ago

I like both outfits (but I'm partial to stripes lately) and think the boots look fantastic with the red jeans. I find it hard to blend with other moms too, but my problem is usually the opposite of yours - I tend to dress in a lot of black (black jeans, black boots, black moto jacket), which ends up standing out just as much as your bright outfits.

  • Angie replied 11 years ago

KILLER - both outfits, despite the first top being too short for comfort.

  • replied 11 years ago

Oh, I bet your bright looks were inspiring to the other moms on the go! You look completely fab.

  • moira replied 11 years ago

Yes, you might find yourself in a sea of red skinnies soon.
You show 'em how it's done, kid.

  • Tina.b replied 11 years ago

You look just fantastic in coloured jeans and you've styled them perfectly.
