WIW for my hum drum life

Here's what I wore the past two days - I don't think they're super special or anything, but I was comfy in them, and just warm enough in this gorgeous fall weather.

#1 Black jeans, Gray/black heathered sweater, black oxford booties.  This felt kinda dark and drab wearing it, but I couldn't come up with a good way to add something bright.  I tried a white tee under (#3), but I thought it looked better without.  So I decided that I didn't mind the dark and drab.  :)

#2 I've been wondering if I'm over my red jeans from last winter.  I really want a pair of burgundy ones - tomato red like these is much less "me".  But I decided to give them a bash today, copying the colors of an outfit that I noticed last Sunday at church and liked - tomato red, black and teal.  and I'm glad I did, because I liked it, and suddenly want to wear these again.  I'm looking for fresh color combos though - I think I'll try pink...

What do you think?  Suggestions for improvement?  I kinda feel like these are uninspired, but then, they're perfect for my kinda hum-drum life :)

What about a colored cami with the gray sweater, just for a peek of color at the neck? And it is NOT dark and drab, I prefer subdued. I love those red jeans on you!

Oh, and working and homeschooling 5 kids? Hum drum does not compute :)

  • Suz replied 10 years ago

I actually really like it in #3 a lot! And I can see Pil's suggestion, too. The jeans are great on you!

Also, what she said about kids and homeschooling and working. You are amazing!

What Pil and Suz said about #1. Also: you can't go wrong with some statement jewelry with a bit of color (if that's your style). Statement earrings and some bangles on the wrist will add some visual interest.

#2: teal and tomato red... GENIUS!

Homeschooling 5 kids? Wow :) still looking fab while doing it!

Heh, at least you posted!  I admit to having 2 WIW from this week that are still just on the camera, as I don't feel especially wowed by them.
Nothing wrong with dressing just to feel comfy and warm with the start of fall.

To me the first outfit is not humdrum. The heathering, the draping, and the pretty skin around the neck all add interest. I am probably the queen of subdued outfits so you may not want to listen to me. The second outfit is some really interesting colorblocking. Arresting, even. Not boring. You may be less boring than you think you are!

p.s. I've been wondering about the work + homeschooling.... can you explain? Thanks!

Like the first one and not dark and drab the contrast between the black and grey adds interest as does the heathered look of the sweater.

I love the 3 colors in the red jeans styling... can understand wanting burgundy in addition to this, though.  I bought red-orange last year and added skinny burgundy cords for this season....

These are great outfits, Amiable. I do not see humdrum at all--I see stylish and practical. This is exactly how I dress too. YLF. Btw, I like the top layered in 3 too.

Loving #3!  The white just adds something to it.

  • Karie replied 10 years ago

I like your outfits, and I especially like your tomato red jeans. And 5 kids, homeschooling, and working does not equal hum-drum!

  • replied 10 years ago

You look good! 1 is not drab at all. I like it with the white too.

Your red and teal outfit is great.

  • Hil replied 10 years ago

Life can feel humdrum - and the getting dressed for it feel like that too... but that does not mean it is! You look very put together. I really like #1, with and without the white layer.

Aimiable your grey outfit looks soft and gentle. I like the subdued tones and imagine they suit the autumnal light.
Would dying your red jeans in purple turn them burgundy? Or maybe black would work.

Thanks you all - In some ways, I'm glad that life and dressing is a bit humdrum (to me) at the moment - less stress!  I like not feeling like there's emergencies all around me :)

Adelfa - I work 25 hours a week, and my husband also works part time.  When I'm at work (from my in-home basement office), my husband is home teaching my kids.  I work two full days a week, every morning before my family is up, and most evenings after my kids are in bed (and also most afternoons, when I make them take a 1.5 - 2 hour quiet time in their beds).   So while the combo doesn't leave a ton of down-time, it does all fit in :)  Yay for flexible work hours!

Well my eyes popped out reading about your schedule but luckily I had already looked at your pictures and I really like the cowl top with and without the white tee. Now I have to go find my eyes!

In our family "hum-drum life" is a favorite quote for the old musical, "Singin' in the Rain."  What you have, Amy, is a real life, and a full one, too!

My red jeans are rarely worn this year, too, although I wore them extensively last year, and they've faded a bit.  I'm also looking for a great burgundy pair, although I do have a passable pair in my closet now.  You've done a great job with the colorblocking here, and I still respond positively to the "pop" of red jeans when I see them.  The color blocking and fit are terrific, as are the boots.  On a side note, I've noticed men wearing red jeans recently.  What about trying to pin and copy a guy's look for a little androgynous look?

As for the grey drapey top --- Everyone needs something like this in the closet.  Neutral, cozy and fluid.  I like it with the white underneath, and the cami idea is good, too.  What about pairing it with the red jeans?

As for your feeling "blah," do you think you'd like a twinge more of structure in your casual outfits?  Maybe a single accessory?  I know that I like "minimal casual" looks when I use a single, but vibrant, color as a focus point.  I'm not saying I look better in them, although in my case, I probably do, but I need some sort of strong element to feel the outfit is finished.

Gotta go....your post reminded me that I've not gathered the "materials" for our science experiment today..............

  • Emily replied 10 years ago

Hey, pretty lady!  You are rocking those red jeans and moto boots.  I quite like #1 and #3, especially #3.  That is totally something I would wear.  I think Beth Ann is right about adding an accessory - what about a chunky watch or some bracelets?  Maybe you crave, if not ALGO, ALMGO? (...A Little More Going On)

  • amiable replied 10 years ago

FWIW, The white tee under the drapey heathered gray top works better in the pic than IRL.  The textures stuck to each other and ended up clinging in weird ways :)

BethAnn - have fun in Science!  I love these "projects", don't you? :)   And I love your idea of looking for androgynous red-jeans looks!  I'll definitely do that.  (Last time I was Goodwilling, I found a pair of pink mens very very slouchy skinnies from Zara.  I was so tempted to try them on, but was a little worried that I'd like them, so I didn't.  If it had been after the "pink goes with everything" post, I probably would have!)

And yes Emily, maybe I am wanting just ALMGO -- I'll have to consider that.

You are looking great Amiable - love #3 in particular but I also like the other 2. Many of us who work at home probably feel a little ho-hum from time to time but you definitively have your hands full - and to do that and find time to post is pretty cool.

  • Angie replied 10 years ago

You look terrific in cowl and drape necks, Amy. Try pairing your red jeans with your burgundy top and booties.

  • Amy replied 10 years ago

I love that drapey gray top on you! You look great.

  • Adelfa replied 10 years ago

Okay Ami, thanks for the answer. Wow. May I just say to you and Beth Ann and anyone else homeschooling that the only reason I didn't homeschool my (two) kids is that *I knew I couldn't possibly take it*!!!! Just helping them with homework and projects was quite enough! Luckily they managed to turn out good anyway :-)
