WIW: sour green

Today's orphan (day 12) is a green cabled sweater.  It's been an orphan for a long time.  Last year I didn't wear it because it felt too big and loose.  This year I like the fit better (wish it was longer though), but the sour green of the sweater is really throwing me.  It took several attempts this morning to style is in a way that I thought I could wear.  (They key ended up being combining it with a cool color to offset the yellowish undertone of the green).

So, I'm okay with this outfit - it might be a tad preppy for me, I'm not sure (do you think it is?).  But I'm not sure this sweater is versatile enough to keep around.  What do you think?

And as always, I welcome suggestions for improvement!

Hmmm, I would like a bit more length on the sweater, but this cropped look is coming back in. And it's a v-neck.

Maybe the color is not coming through well either?  I was expecting a brighter almost granny smith green.

  • Suz replied 10 years ago

I think the cropped length might work better if the top's tails were a bit longer. But hard to say. It sounds as if you do not love it...so why not let it go?

  • amiable replied 10 years ago

Yeah - my pictures are dark (it's raining today, this was about the best I think I'll get).  The green is a mid-tone - I'd say a few shades darker than a granny smith green.

And you know, I've always liked green and always liked cables - I think that's why I still have this sweater - because it has so many things that should make me love it.  I also like that it's big enough to layer a button-down under it, and like that it's a V-neck...  (Suz, you're right that a longer button down would work lots better!  A replacement for this chambray shirt with a longer one is on my list...)

Still, with all that I like about it, I find this sweater really quite difficult.  So I probably will let it go.

I am with Suz in that I think the sweater would work well over a slightly longer shirt. The color reads "olive" on my screen... but that could just be the lighting. Overall, I really like the idea of the cropped sweater over longer shirt tails. I think it is a good look for you. I am just not sure if this sweater is "the one".

I like this exercise of wearing orphans. I think I need to do this too. I don't think preppy is bad. Do you? Is the sweater avocado green? That's how it looks online. Also, it looks like the sweater is not pulled down completely in the front. I think the outfit looks fine. It may not be your favorite outfit, but nothing wrong with it. If you wanted to get rid of the sweater, I would understand. Avocado is hard to wear, although it's one of my favorite colors!

  • Parsley replied 10 years ago

I kind of like the color, but I agree that if it were a little longer it would be better. The denim shirt is a good idea, although I agree with Suz that longer shirt tails would be better. I don't know- is it more trouble than it's worth to make this work?

  • amiable replied 10 years ago

The color of the sweater is less gray than either olive or avocado - sorry for the poor lighting.  I would consider it a slightly darker tone of sour apple green. - just a bit darker than this:  http://colornames.facts.co/app.....ncolor.php

I like the curved hem of the shirt with this. What about brown or olive pants? Would it work with a pencil-ish skirt?

  • amiable replied 10 years ago

And Parsley - exactly.  I think it's probably more trouble than it's worth.  I have plenty of other clothes, after all :)

  • Word Lily replied 10 years ago

Diff shoes would be less preppy. Cons, maybe? That shape of sweater (boxy, a little shortish) is really in.

  • amiable replied 10 years ago

    Word Lily!  Welcome to YouLookFab!

How completely amazing to "see" someone I know IRL on this forum.  I hope you come to enjoy it as much as I do :)

And yes - I could totally try my cons here.

You're right, this length sweater is much more in - but I'm not sure I'm comfy with it yet..

  • amiable replied 10 years ago

I wonder if that's the rub here - this shape of sweater is on it's way "in", making me feel like it would be foolish to ditch it when I'll probably be getting lots of ideas on how to wear it in these next several months.  Maybe it'll stay in "probation" a while longer - it's certainly comfy there, having sat there, escaping purges, for nearly two years now.

  • Karie replied 10 years ago

The cropped length of the sweater is back in style, add in a denim or chambray shirt with slightly longer tails (Old Navy has those), a pair of cons, and it might be a keeper. On the other hand, if it's hard to style and you have to think to much about how to style it, I would consider letting it go.

I am going to join the others in saying that the sweater would look best with a longer shirt under it. You could do an orange with this for Fall and a brighter blue for early Spring.... Darker blue for winter....but as the others have said...itcomes off more avocado colored. Perfect ffor this time of year. :-)

I'm kind of on the fence with this sweater Amy. I find it a bit short and boxy, although as you've mentioned, the cropped sweater length is coming back in. I think Suz is on to something in trying it over a shirt with longer tails. That could help with the proportions. I do like the color for you and I gotta tell you, I'm so incredibly impressed with your effort to try all your orphans. Well done!

  • Word Lily replied 10 years ago

Yeah, I'm not comfortable in that length either. The shirt under (with longer tails, as is the consensus) should maybe fix that. The color should be fab on you.

  • annagybe replied 10 years ago

It's not the current style of cropped sweaters. It reads a bit old.

Ah Amy I say put that puppy on probation. If he is good he can come back out and play.

  • catgirl replied 10 years ago

Longer shirt underneath!  I think that will help the proportion issue.

  • amiable replied 10 years ago

You know Word Lily, the color isn't as fab on me as it should be - it's too yellow to be perfect for my coloring.  But I think it's fine when it's combined with the blue.

And Anna, if you check this thread again - help my eye see the difference between the modern cropped sweaters and this one - is it the V neck?  The cables? Maybe the sleeves aren't narrow enough?  Or the sweater is too long?

  • catgirl replied 10 years ago

I see more fitted and more cropped as current, plus, the Shaker-ish look is what seems dated.  I know yours is cabled but it recalls that look to me.  I actually think this is a normal functional sweater, not particularly trendy but not screaming "I'm dated!" either.

You can see modern ones here, and if you scroll down, a vintage 90s one very much like yours.

  • amiable replied 10 years ago

I see the resemblance to the shaker sweater (something I'd never heard of), definitely.  (And I'm sure this is probably vintage 90s too).  Hmmm.... food for thought.  This is definitely going to probation, but may actually just get purged.  I'll stick it in probation until I know how many of my other sweaters will support a shirt layered under it.

  • Emily replied 10 years ago

You're lovely as always, but I don't like the colour or style of this sweater.  I hope you keep its stay in probation mercifully short.

May I say that I am really enjoying your orphan challenge?  You are clearly attacking it with gusto and your enthusiasm is infectious!  I am quietly following along with "No Repeat November"...

  • annagybe replied 10 years ago

As Una said it's a shaker knit. Sweaters are either REALLY boxy or cropped and fitted. This is neither here nor there. I don't think a longer shirt will save it either.
