WIW: cobalt and houndstooth (ETA: color in better lighting)

I had a few small windows of time and a sewing machine with me at the wedding last weekend, so I made myself a quick little tube skirt.  It's a black/white doubleknit houndstooth (with a little "noise" in the knit, so that it reads closer to black/gray).

Paired today with my cobalt shirt from Susie.  What do you think?

Also, what's the color like on me?  I'd like to think the cobalt is a good color for me (and I'm wearing nothing on my face, btw), but I feel washed out in these pics....  (maybe the cobalt has just a touch of gray in it?)

ETA: It stopped raining, so I stepped outside and took a head shot in the brighter light.  Now I think the color is fine on me (I also added tinted lip balm) - so it was just the bad lighting making me washed out.  Do you agree - is this color actually fine on me?

Oooh I like! And I think the cobalt works well for you.

Super outfit! And wow, I wish I had your skill with a sewing machine. It's really tough to judge the cobalt on you because of lighting issues. If you think it normally works, it probably does!

What a spectacular combination! I really love this(silhouette and colour) on you Amiable. I am wondering what the skirt would look like  if you shortened it a tad? To my eye, if you wear flats,  it may need a little shortening to lengthen your lovely leg line.

I think the color looks great on you!  And I totally plan to copy this combination at the earliest possible opportunity!

    Yes, the colour is good!

Yes, lighting makes all the difference.

Totally lighting issue. You look great in that cobalt shirt! And I love the skirt.  Looooove it.  I have a sweet eye for black and white patterns, I really do.

You look terrific in coblat!  Love the combination with the houndsooth.

It looks super on you. No fears!

Big thumbs up - you're becoming the resident tube skirt maven!

  • Jaime replied 10 years ago

I love the large houndstooth you chose! The cobalt is great on you. I am just wondering if you should shorten it a bit (still below the knee) and if you will make me one too ;-)

  • amiable replied 10 years ago

I totally would Shevia - except that I cut up a dress to make it, and don't have another to cut up!

Thanks for the compliment though!  And I haven't put on a waist band yet - so that will probably shorten it about an inch.

Cobalt is your color and i have a sweet eye for houndstooth. I so wish I had your sewing skills.

I love this combo!  I usually combine my cobalt blue tank with my black and white striped skirt.  But your version is trendier and dressier.  Like it!

    The color suits you IMO.

ETA - I also agree that the skirt might look better shorter.

You just happened to have a sewing machine and whip up a fab skirt at a wedding?  Sounds like a business enterprise!  Skirts while you wait....  You look great!

  • Beth Ann replied 10 years ago

Excellent sewing inspiration!  You didn't take the dress off one of the guests, did you?

Love both pieces.  Cobalt is a powerful color, but you wear it well!

Love the houndstooth skirt sewing project. The cobalt top is lovely with it. I'll be the spanner and say I dont think cobalt is your *best* color. I see the bold shirt before I see *you* IFKWIM, but I am 100% for wearing colors that make you happy whether they are technically your "colors" or not and you look thrilled in your outside pic so I would wear it and be happy and not give it a second thought.

ETA: there is of course a personality aspect we dont see straightaway in the photo, and I think your bright personality wears the bold colors well :)

Great point Sarah - I also don't think Cobalt is my best color (or I wouldn't have asked).  Burgundy is clearly better on me than cobalt. (So is indigo, and charcoal, I think)  But I'm convincing myself that it's good enough to stay - at least for now.  :)

  • Sarah A replied 10 years ago

Oh yes, dfinately good enough to stay!  :) I know I look better in optic white than cream but my cream silk blouses arent going anywhere....

  • amiable replied 10 years ago

So do I! (Look better in Optic white than cream) - it's one of the biggest surprises to me this past year.  I'm glad I'm not the only brunette around with cooler coloring :)  (I spent the first 36 years of my life thinking I was warm colored... wow)

    Fantastic sewing project.
Adore your skirt.  Keep the shirt, it looks great in the outdoor shot and is such a lovely pairing with the skirt.

  • Amy replied 10 years ago

I love love love this! You look wonderful.

ETA: the cobalt is great with your complexion!

  • Day Vies replied 10 years ago

Love these colors & pattern. The shoes are delicious! (I am a complete sucker for any look using cobalt)

  • Sveta replied 10 years ago

I think cobalt looks great on you and the whole outfit is super fab!

  • deb replied 10 years ago
