WIW: weekend getaways (and two of Angie's formulas)

Birthday celebrations (from last week) continued this weekend with a mini-retreat with some friends to a nearby town.  I had to leave the retreat a bit early to attend a family friend's wedding, and I didn't take my camera.  So here's my outfits as I tried them out beforehand.

#1 New-to-me jeans (gray jeans #2 - Jag Jeans.  I love them.  They have black studs around the pockets!)  They're straight legged. And new-to-me varying grays and white striped tee.  Both Good Will from earlier this week.

#2 I thought I might get cold, so I added a jacket (which I've had a long time).

#3 And a hoodie, just in case (this hoodie also from Good Will this week - it's SO soft).

#4 The jacket over hoodie outfit from Angie a week or two back.

#5 And the back view.

#6-8 Topped with my new-to-me white coat (Old Navy) from Good Will.  I'm in love with this coat.  I don't think my friends were fans though.  Am I delusional?

#9-10 WIW to the wedding - Angies cropped top (I think hers was a sweater instead of a jacket though) over a flared skirt.   I added silver sparkly earrings to go with the bracelet, and the white coat.  Does the combo work?  (The skirt is black eyelet, the jacket is new-to-me DKNY Jeans blue and black jaquard, from Good Will earlier this week).

See, I did buy lots at Good Will (I think this isn't quite half way through yet?)

What do you think?  Suggestions for improvements on the outfits?  Purchasing errors?

Off to catch up with what's been going on here in my day and a half gone :)

Amy, you look so pretty and happy! Love the footwear! #2 looks super cool and how clever are you to find a hoodie to work with it?

The coat makes me wonder if you're experiencing a bit of a style shift. Do you find the words "urban prince" have a different ring to you these days? ;) Seriously -- the coat looks a little bit on the feminine side for your ideal, aspirational style due to the cut (i.e. it looks as if it has a sort of seam and then a "skirted" bottom, albeit not wide)  -- BUT, having said that, I love all the collar options on it, love that it is white/cream, and think it is a fantastic piece for you to experiment with. You carry the drama of this coat very well. Hmmm. I wonder if MY Goodwilll has one of those....

You look so pretty in your wedding outfit. A bit retro.

You know Suz - you have a good point.  As I look at my style over the last year and a bit, I think I'm consistently becoming more feminine and more polished.  I'm not sure if it's what's really "me", or if it's just the influence of this forum.   But I like it.  At least I think I do.

And I funny thing about outfit #2 (which I wore most of the day and evening), is that my happiness factor was really really high in it, but it contained no color.  It was gray/black/white from head to toe.  Yet I loved it.  This is not what I expect from myself, ha!

A white coat is terribly impractical with kids and dirty winters, but I'm smitten with it, perhaps for it's impracticality which makes it feel very bold and fun - the same that I remember feeling about my red jeans last winter.

Thanks for the food for thought!

(And you're correct - the coat is cream - "winter white" is how I'm thinking of it)

Winter white is absolutely stunning on "true summers." It's a terrific coat and you can play with it all you like at this price, right?

Here's something that might interest you. I love colour, period...I mean I really perk up with some colour. Makes me happy.

But i have noticed distinct differences between seasons. Not only do I reach for different colours, but my overall colour tolerance is lower in winter and I prefer to wear more neutrals. That is, I prefer to wear more neutrals assuming I also have a dose of light/ bright/ shine in an outfit. AND, I desperately need a bright coat or scarf (either a colour or winter white) or I feel really blah after a while. I think the quality of light makes different colours look good on me, objectively, but different ones also look good TO me, depending on the light.

Hi Amy, I hope you had a fabulous weekend away!  Your casual outfits look classic and polished, and your wedding outfit chic.  I think Suz is bang on about the coat being more feminine than your usual, with the cream colour and wide collar.  I really like it on you, the cut and fit are lovely!

  • amiable replied 10 years ago

Yes absolutely Suz ($8!)  I suspect I'm more wintry than summery (but I honestly don't know).  But I intend to enjoy the coat anyway.  I'm glad you're pointing out that it's more feminine than usual for me - I suspect that's part of what my friends were reacting to.  (The impracticality of the color, and the out of norm for my style.)  And it's entirely possible that the coat is all wrong for me and my style, and I just haven't noticed yet :)

    Hi Amy,

You look so great in all your outfits and you are rocking that coat! Style flexibility is a good thing!

I love #1,2. The new white coat is a fab change of pace. You are looking good!

  • Runcarla replied 10 years ago

Wowsa, Aimiable! This is an awesome set of looks, and that coat/trench is drool worthy. Modern, with just a whiff of steam punk. I hope you keep it and wear the heck out of it, but if you change your mind....I'll volunteer to give it a home! My kids are 21 and 24!

  • E replied 10 years ago

That coat is so striking, especially closed! My goodwills almost never have awesome coats (probably because no one here owns any, lol). The hoodie and blazer combination is really fun too. :)

  • Neel replied 10 years ago

That coat is a beauty!  And I love it closed with both styles of the collar!  You look stunning in white!

And the wedding outfit is super too!  Love the shoes!  Great finds!!

You look fabulous, Amy!  I have a pair of Jag bootcuts that I love, and your "new" grey pair looks great!  I think you've done a great job with a longer, lower stance jacket and hoodie, too!

I love the winter white coat.  It has lovely structure and shape.  I think you do have a "shadow style" that is feminine, and a bit retro.  This coat will be so perfect for the holidays.  Think about wearing it on Christmas Eve and New Years (like I really dress up for New Years -- ha!).

re: the white coat---sometimes we need something that's not exactly us and/or is not completely practical. just like sometimes we NEED dessert

  • carter replied 10 years ago

Great outfits! Love the shoes in both. The coat is awesome. I love that it's an unexpected look for you.

  • Word Lily replied 10 years ago

Ooh, that's a great coat! I do think it's a tad more feminine than most of your outfits, but wow, it's awesome. I especially like it buttoned all the way up. The stripes are fun, as is the hoodie/blazer combo (I think I would boil alive ...). And I love the wedding outfit, too.

  • Karie replied 10 years ago

Well now, I think your coat is gorgeous. If I'd have been there, I'd have been swooning over it - and trying to put it in my suitcase ;)

It's a style departure for you, but why not? I love playing with other styles and making them my own.

  • karymk replied 10 years ago

Amy, the coat is fantastic! Good selection! You have a good eye! I wish I could go shopping at GW with you and pop some tags. We'd have so much fun.
